Overview

The Maasai have inhabited Africa for hundreds of years and their cultural tradition and practices have endured to the present day. And it is their rhythm of life as embodied in their traditions which the outside world has wanted to learn and understand.

One Horizon's amazing twilight experience, Campfire Stories, is about the life of the Maasai and their traditions, told with the humour and insight that only the Maasai can bring. Stories about their ancestors, their families and the traditions which dictate their life.

This magical experience is held at a Maasai village on the outskirts of Nairobi starting in the late afternoon and ending in early evening. In a magical Maasai village that is the home to an extended family, you will see Maasai returning to the village from a day walking their herds in search of grazing land. And as you meet your hosts, you will start to appreciate what an amazing adventure this is going to be.

itinerary

You are transported from your hotel late afternoon for the drive to the Maasai homelands just outside of Nairobi.

Upon arriving at the village our experience starts with a warm and generous meeting from your Maasai hosts. As age old conservationists your Maasai hosts will show you how they have lived off the land and how the local ecosystems have supported them with herbs and medicinal remedies. And from there your hosts will demonstrate how they co-exist with wildlife. The Maasai are the ultimate conservationists and seek to live with wildlife in a natural harmony. They will demonstrate how they avoid confrontation and discourage predators that follow their wanderings with their herds. And along the way you can engage with the Maasai in practicing some of their skills that they display at events in the Maasai calendar every year. One skill is club throwing that is part of a young man's transition into adult life and he has to achieve a particular level of mastery. The ensuing contest is also a way to bond with the villagers and they will relish the opportunity for you to be involved.

Lots of fun and laughter goes hand in hand with the Maasai life and how they see the world. And if you like singing and dancing, there is the rhythmic beat of their songs which inspire all to be involved and which will draw you into the enjoyment of the afternoon and early evening.

And the centre piece of this experience are the campfire stories which will leave you with great respect and admiration for your hosts. The stories are told around a roaring campfire and cover their life growing up, the rituals and traditions of life and the extended family structures which are the foundations of Maasai life. The campfire stores will have people drawing comparisons to their own life and are a magical part of the evening.
